I am taking an indefinite hiatus from Tumblr to focus on my transfer to law. Over the year, I’ve cut down (almost completely) on video games and TV shows, and it follows from this that Tumblr would eventually become another victim.

Today, I went to the art gallery for the German modernism exhibit. I realised that I was completely unable to comment on the movements of the art there (pre-WWI expressionism, inter-war modernism, dadaism, New Objectivity, etc) despite having accumulated hundreds of posts in art over the past few months. Similarly, my photographic skills have not improved since the photographic phase of this blog.

I sheepishly admit that I was sucked into the appeal of turning up on the categorical radar, and I realise now that I gained no personal fulfilment from posting so many paintings, sculptures, installations, photos, etc.

I feel that online personae popularly projected here are, to varying extents, flirtatious, unappreciative, exhibitionist and, at times, absolutely not empathic, solely seeking contact or to stimulate sexual tension and rendering this social network, in my view, cliquey and uninviting. This and the strong presence of a Eurocentric ideal of beauty that already pervades real life does not emphasise that a person’s quality comes from character and not the corporeal. 

Intermittently, over the past week, I have had the urge to come back here and use this medium as an emotional outlet once more. Getting burdens off one’s chest for a potentially large, mostly unfamiliar audience while also savouring the anonymity given by the internet is great - don’t get me wrong - but solving problems always involved acceptance and confrontation rather than avoidance or thought-text translation. This lesson was further cemented in my brain here.

I may return once academic pressure subsides, but this blog will no longer be for the sake of random findings of art again.
